Derek started flying at 16 in the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Although he didn't finish his pilot credentials then, life led to sailing the Caribbean, graduating from university, and touring the US numerous times as a musician. Eventually, that touring led him to discover the paradise that is the Santa Barbara coast.

Derek would go on to complete all his pilot training with Above All, from Private Pilot to CFI. He's an airplane camping enthusiast, always eager to find new airports for overnight stays. When not flying, you can find Derek surfing, hiking, or still recording and playing music with his groups on both the East and West Coasts.
